Alex, Tom

Are you looking forward to the gig tonight? Is it good to be playing Nottingham again?
Tom: Yeah it's cool!
Alex: It's a good stage for us, similar to the Barfly.
Tom: It's weird to be back here already after only two days, ( DMBT played Nottingham Stealth two days beforehand) but I think Thursday was the warm up and tonight it the real deal!

You're making your festival debut at Download festival at Donington, how does it feel to be a part of that?
Alex: We're excited! We get passes for both days so that's cool. We'd prefer to play the Saturday though as it's ultra-metal day and we don't really fit in on the bill.
Tom: I'm looking forward to it though.

What has been your best gig?
Alex: Barfly in January. It was sold out and it was flawless for us. Our equipment always breaks or fucks up but that was great!
Tom: When we supported Turbonegro at the Mean Fiddler it was fantastic, it went down really well. We fucking love Turbonegro.

How about your worst?
Tom: Thursday night at Nottingham was pretty rubbish!
Alex: The drums were sliding across the stage at the front. My Big Muff pedal had loose wires in so my guitar sounded like sleighbells all the way through!
Tom: They closed the bar downstairs near the stage as soon as we came on, so everyone went upstairs to get drinks! Ruined it somewhat. They wanted to drink more than listen to us!

How would you describe your sound?
Alex: People always go on about 'effortlessly fusing different genres together' and stuff but I think we do everything. We confuse!
Tom: It's loud rock-pop music. If you take all the loudness away and the guitars then I think it's pop because we do write good catchy songs. It's the same components that create that sound. I don't know why people make such a big deal about what it is.
Alex: A good pop song will cross all genres. If something's a good song, it doesn't matter if you play it quietly or loud as fuck, it would still be a good song!

Who came up with the name and is there any particular reason behind it?
Alex: When I was at Uni I had this greek friend called Theo, he was a good looking guy but none of the ladies liked him as around our area the racism was quite prominent, they thought he was turkish so they didn't like him. He made a general observation about the british girls that were around our uni, "These girls walk around with tops saying 'do me bad things' on", like these 'Hello big boy!' and 'Look at my knockers!' sort of tshirts. I just thought it was cool, just nicked it for the name!

There's been a lot of press about the fact that The Darkness turned up to your Dublin Castle gig, do you worry that the fact that your signed to the same label as them would overshadow your music?
Tom: I did worry a little bit. A bloke at Rough Trade, who put out our first 7" said that Must Destroy need to be careful not to get a reputation for signing 'comedy metal bands', it's like,' I didn't realise we were a comedy metal band!'.
Alex: I like The Darkness. We went to see them at The Garage a while back, with The Darkness you love them or hate them. I think that people are turning against them.
Are you concerned that people think you're a novelty band due to the fact there's nine of you?
Tom: It did occur to us but then I just thought fuck 'em.
Alex: It all depends on whether they actually listen to the music or not or if they just look at us. Of course we've got a look going on but that's not the point.
Tom: We don't sound like a novelty band.

What has been the worst or funniest thing that you've read about yourselves?
Tom: That we're signed to Rough Trade?
Alex: Someone said that we've made the worst record they've ever heard in their lives!
Tom: We did it! I thought we were quite an easy listening band actually. Didn't expect to get that sort of reaction.
Alex: I think that a lot of the hatred that is directed at The Darkness will now be directed at us as people assume we're similar.

What is your favourite song of yours?
Alex: The one that really gets me at the moment, it's going to be on the album and will probably be a single at some point is called 'Off The Hook'.
Tom: 'Time For Deliverance'. Noone reading this will have heard it though!

What bands do you rate at the moment?
Tom: Jellyfish.
Alex: I love Randy Newman.
Tom: New bands, there's a band called 'We Rock Like Girls Don't'. They're my tip for 2004!

What are your plans for this year then? What are your ambitions for this band?
Tom: Get the album out and do loads of gigs.
Alex: Do as much as possible!
